Two weeks have passed since the finish of EARC (East Asian Regional Conference) 2024. It was a busy, fun, challenging and encouraging time. I continue to thank God for the opportunity to meet with brothers and sisters from all over East Asia, who came from different countries, cultures, backgrounds and traditions but are all one in Christ Jesus. There were around 500 students, staff and volunteers gathered and I am sure that it is an experience that none of us will forget in a hurry. The greatest blessing for me was being able to hear stories of faith and perseverance, despite the challenges, which have spurred me on to keep serving Christ in my own context.
A highlight of the conference for me was the Bible expositions. Titus (Not his real name) from movement B led us through the book of Zechariah. Throughout the conference he challenged us to have changed hearts and lives in response to what God has done. Just like Israel, it is important for us to remember who we are, who God is and what He has promised to do. We wait in anticipation for the day when the only king Jesus returns, all is made right and all creation worships Him.
As a staff worker, I was in a small group with other staff. At first, I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t get to spend this time with students but I enjoyed the fellowship of these fellow workers. I was particularly encouraged to hear that the challenges that face students and staff are mostly the same, no matter what country you are from. I heard from a Malaysian staff worker about how students are always looking for ways to have fun and be happy rather than seeking true worship. We also shared the challenges of encouraging students to share the gospel in a time when it is difficult for them to build relationships with their classmates. I am thankful for the time I got to spend with these fellow workers for the kingdom.
At the beginning of the conference many of our students were nervous about being in Thailand and having to speak English. Of course, because it was a student conference, there was plenty of time for fun and frivolity which helped them to relax. The Thai funfair introduced us to Thai culture and gave us opportunities to explore culinary delights and the arts. Outings to popular tourist destinations and other optional activities helped them to get to know each other in a more informal way. By the end of the week all of the KGK students had come out of their shells and were enjoying fellowship with others in their small groups.
Personally, I also really enjoyed the casual opportunities I had to chat with students over meals, during free time and at my workshop. I was encouraged by students who were thinking through how they can serve God, both now and in the future. God was doing big things in the lives of those who were there and I pray that as we live in the security of the victory that Christ won, we will be faithful servants of our King.
